The São Paulo State University (Universidade Estadual Paulista, UNESP) – the
second largest university in Brazil – has built a high-end distributed infrastructure for
scientific computing that might be considered the first, and one of the largest, Campus
Grid initiatives in Latin America, with resources widely dispersed over the State of São
Paulo. It comprises a network of clusters located in seven distinct campuses of the
University and meets the demand of a variety of scientific fields such as Materials
Science, Biology and Biophysics, Weather Forecast, Computer Science, Chemistry,
Physics, Earth Science, and Engineering. The project, known as GridUNESP, started
its operations in the third quarter of 2009 and nowadays almost 200 users from 30
research groups are actively using its resources....
